Hey there, New England Fish Fans!

FOOW will make its East Coast Premiere at the Rhode Island International Film Festival (RIIFF) tomorrow Saturday, August 8th, at 7:15pm, at the Bell Street Chapel, 5 Bell St., Providence, Rhode Island. Also, big thanks to our friends at Marriage Equality Rhode Island (MERI) for the wonderful post about our film.

Updates from Outest!

Greetings from Los Angeles!

We are three days into our Outfest excursion and things are already bananas!

The festival kicked off at the beautiful Orpheum Theatre Thursday night with a series of honors and introductions, including an Achievement Award for out Writer/Director Don Roo (The Opposite of Sex, Single White Female) introduced by Lisa Kudrow and and Christina Ricci. Executive Director Kirsten Schaffer gave a compelling speech about GLBT film and visibility, declaring that gay rights must be, "recognized, equalized, and legalized." We couldn't have said it better. La Mission, featuring Benjamin Bratt directed by Peter Bratt, opening up the festival and didn't leave a dry eye in the house. Watch out for this film.

Friday we had the immense pleasure of spending the afternoon with Adam Bouska, the photographer behind the No H8 Campaign. Photos of the FOOW team in the duct taped, white tees outfits to come! (Can you imagine us not being able to talk for more than five minutes?)

Ticket sales for Fish out of Water are selling quick, and the RSVP list of some very familiar VIPs is growing! Please share this link with everyone you know in the LA area; we want to sell this puppy out!

We've met a slew of incredible film folks, including Director Nicole Opper of Off and Running and Tamar Clezerman of The Other War.

We've got more videos, photos, and announcements to come! Follow us on twitter for all the up-to-the-minute happenings! We couldn't be here without your endless support and enthusiasm.

Slapped in the face again: Prop 8 is upheld in California

The California Supreme Court has upheld a voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, but it also decided that the estimated 18,000 gay couples who tied the knot before the law took effect will stay wed.

The decision Tuesday rejected an argument by gay rights activists that the ban revised the California constitution's equal protection clause to such a dramatic degree that it first needed the Legislature's approval.

To read more, visit the Huffington Post

This is a giant slap in the face after November's major blow, and feels like a devastating step back after the recent victories for marriage equality in states like Vermont and Iowa. It also serves as a reminder to us all that we still have an uphill battle ahead, and why education and advocacy is more important than ever.

We highly encourage you to pass along the Fish out of Water trailer to your friends, families, co-workers, neighbors, baristas and bartenders and anyone else you can think of in the spirit of awareness and change: Official Fish out of Water film trailer

Step by step we WILL get there. Stay tuned...

Iowa Supreme Court set to rule Friday on same-sex marriage

Hey FOOW Fans,

In addition to Vermont, Iowa is joining the fight for same-sex marriage.

Iowa Supreme Court set to rule Friday on same-sex marriage Statewide gatherings planned in response for supporters of marriage equality Today the Iowa Supreme Court posted notice of a Friday ruling in the Varnum v. Brien marriage case that could lead to the freedom to marry for gay couples in Iowa. If the Court upholds the August 2007 District Court ruling, Iowa would join Massachusetts and Connecticut in offering marriage licenses to committed same-sex couples.

One Iowa
, the state’s largest lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) advocacy group, is planning community gatherings across Iowa on Friday evening. The rallies are designed to give marriage supporters an opportunity to gather and express their support for marriage equality, regardless of the outcome. “We’re hopeful to gather tomorrow evening in celebration of a historic ruling that will ensure that all Iowa families are treated fairly. Win, lose, or draw, we want our community and allies to come together to share in this historic moment,” said Carolyn Jenison, Executive Director of One Iowa.

One Iowa, the state’s largest LGBT advocacy organization, is dedicated to supporting full equality for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals living in Iowa through grassroots education and advocacy.

Vermont proposes same-sex marriage-Show your support!

Hey you same-sex loving people and fans of same-sex loving people:

The first state to have civil unions is making gay history yet again this week. Although our country took huge steps back in the fight for gay rights with Prop 8, we could take another incredible step forward with gay marriage rights in Vermont.

Tonight is the public hearing for bill S.115, which would eliminate discrimination against gay and lesbian couples in Vermont’s marriage laws, while protecting the right of clergy and religious organizations to refuse to perform marriages contrary to their faith. To follow the hearing, you can listen at the Vermont Freedom to Marry website.

Although Vermont may seem far away, this decision affects every GLBTQA person in America. Everyone thought that California would vote no on Prop 8, and look what happened. Show your support, Sign the Marriage Resolution.

Get behind your community, and send your good energy over to those granola eating, patchouli smelling, flannel wearing same-sex loving Vermonters!

Love,

Fish out of Water
